How pipe weight is calculated

Pipe weight per unit length comes from the cross-sectional area of the pipe wall multiplied by the density of the material. For an outside diameter OD and wall thickness t:

W (lb/ft) = (π / 4) × (OD² − ID²) × ρ × 12

Where ID = OD − 2t and ρ is density in lb/in³. The × 12 converts cubic inches per foot of pipe into the per-foot weight. For carbon steel this simplifies to the practical field formula:

W (lb/ft) = 10.6802 × t × (OD − t)

That constant bakes in the carbon-steel density of 0.2836 lb/in³ along with the geometric factors. Stainless steel (304/316) is about 1.9% heavier — you can multiply the carbon-steel result by 1.019 for a quick conversion, which is what this calculator does internally.

Material densities used

Worked example: 6" SCH 40 carbon steel

NPS 6" pipe has an outside diameter of 6.625" and a Schedule 40 wall of 0.280". Plugging into the simplified formula:

W = 10.6802 × 0.280 × (6.625 − 0.280) W = 10.6802 × 0.280 × 6.345 W = 18.97 lb/ft

For a 40-foot stick that's about 759 pounds — useful to know before you ask three guys to walk it across a deck plate.

What is the formula for pipe weight per foot?
W = (π/4) × (OD² − ID²) × density × 12. For carbon steel the shortcut is W = 10.6802 × t × (OD − t), with t and OD in inches.
How much does 6" SCH 40 steel pipe weigh per foot?
18.97 pounds per foot. OD 6.625", wall 0.280", ID 6.065".
Is XS the same as Schedule 80?
Through NPS 8", yes — identical walls. Above 8", XS holds at a 0.500" wall while Schedule 80 continues to increase with size.
How much heavier is stainless than carbon steel?
About 1.9% heavier for the same geometry. Multiply carbon weight by 1.019 to estimate 304/316 stainless. For shipping purposes treat them as equal.
Why doesn't my measurement match the calculated weight?
ASME B36.10 allows a ±12.5% tolerance on actual wall thickness. The number this calculator gives you is nominal — the published mill weight. For lifts and shipping, add a 5–10% safety factor.
Does this include fittings?
No — straight pipe only. A rough rule of thumb: a long-radius 90° elbow weighs about 1.5× the equivalent length of pipe.
